MEDITATION. It’s such a big unachievable practice. It’s another task on your to do list that you don’t have time for. Do these excuses sound familiar? Yea, I thought so! I’m right there with you, because personally I struggle with keeping a consistent meditation practice, too.

I have this grand idea of a perfect meditation practice that allows me to go into my day as the zened out mama, wife, friend, and teacher that I wish to be. SPOILER! I’m not perfect. You’re not perfect. No meditation practice is perfect. However, there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success before you begin.

Your Pre-Meditation Checklist

  1. Create a designated time and space. Decide when you have a 5-20 minute time block in your day that you can be alone in a quiet space and make that your meditation time. Your meditation doesn’t need to always take place in the same location, but it will be a lot easier for you to create a habit, and switch your brain into “meditation mode”, if you have a controlled and familiar environment.
  2. Set an intention. Going in to any practice will always reap better results if you have a purpose for why you are doing it. Be very clear with yourself about what your purpose is for establishing a meditation practice.
  3. Establish your method. Before beginning your meditation practice for the day decide what method you will use. You can switch it up every day if you want! Will you use an app for a guided meditation? Will you meditate on your breath? Repeat a mantra? Do a body scan? Experiment with different methods and find a few that you enjoy.
  4. Lower your expectations. I mentioned before that I have personally struggled with keeping a consistent meditation practice for many years. It wasn’t until I became a new mom and my life started to feel very chaotic that I made daily meditation a priority because I NEEDED that time. I stopped expecting every meditation to be perfect and peaceful, because I knew that even in my imperfection I still felt so much better afterwards. If you lower your expectations, you are more likely to show up for your self and your meditation practice daily.

Have you started your meditation practice yet? I’d love to hear your experiences, what worked, what didn’t, and how good you felt after! Share your mediation story in the comments below and jump over to instagram for more meditation tips.
